![]() A group of raiders is attacking other islands in the same area and refugees flee to Mau’s island, recognising him as chief. Mau and Daphne slowly become friends, learning to communicate and to understand one another’s cultures. Mau is on his quest to complete the ritual of adulthood within his society when a tsunami kills everyone from his home, while Daphne (born: Ermintrude) is stranded on the island when the ship she was travelling on is swept ashore and wrecked. Nation is the story of an island nation in a world just a couple of blinks away from our own, set in a fantastical version of the 1860’s. ![]() ![]() But, like one of the characters in the novel I’ve just finished, I did not expect to enjoy my time on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean so much! We love the late great Terry Pratchett on this blog, and his parallel world novel Nation certainly swept me away. More than half way through my Reading Ahead Challenge, I’d already visited an art show in Paris, braved the jungles of Colombia, and been dazzled by visions of the near future. ![]()
